In the Shadow of a Shnork

or scroll to explore it yourself

Painted forest at first light, sun falling in shafts between the trunks.

“I have to ask… how did you find your way here?”

At first, just the feeling of being held, somewhere between waking and not.

Then, breath.

I blinked. Once. Twice.

“What am I?”

A golden trail of light rising through a painted forest.

In the Shadow of a Shnork

A forgotten past. A rising force. A truth buried in the dark.

A painted path of moss and light between ancient trees.

I took my first step.

The book was the story.
This is the forest.

The forest had no paths—only choices.

Game footage: running north out of the first glade, past boulders, mushrooms and a shaft of sun.
In the game: running west through the woods at eye level, past boulders and mushrooms.

A beetle scurried nearby. A cluster of mushrooms swayed in the shadows of a log.

In the game: a 360° view of the mushroom patch — a fallen log, ferns, boulders and old stone; drag to look around.

Just wilderness, stretched out in every direction, uncaring and untouched.

Game footage: walking upstream along the bank to the drinking place.

I moved toward the sound of trickling water, faint and erratic, like the forest couldn’t decide if it wanted to hide the stream or reveal it.

Game footage: running along the southern stream past a cluster of mushrooms.

…cold water filling the hollow place in my chest.

Three long gouges torn into a tree beside the stream. Far down the path, something stands in the dark.

…three gouges, long and clean. Not random.

Something that knew these woods better. Something that watched.

Game footage at night: walking through the woods east of the stream; light falls only where you look.

Stars blinked between the leaves.

A distant howl echoed through the trees.

And everything inside it had teeth.

Total darkness. Two burning red eyes.

No sound. No wind. The forest had stopped breathing.

Snap. A branch.

Another. Closer.

Eyes burning red.

Then it charged.

A huge dark beast lunges through the trees at a small figure scrambling below it.

It was fast.

It was hunting me.

Can you survive?

A clearing full of pale, wrinkled, pig-snouted creatures — squatting, sniffing, staring at nothing.

There was something else in this forest.

Three. Four. Five.

They didn’t live.
They lasted.

A large green hand cradles a small cluster of pale, softly glowing mushrooms.

Pale. Soft. Almost glowing.

The forest’s fruit.

“Let this be enough,” I whispered.

A small creature sits upright in a column of light, hand on its chest, looking up at the sky.

It just looked upward.
Toward the sky.

And in that moment, I knew I wasn’t alone.

Game footage: running past orange mushrooms and boulders to the mushrooms by the stream.

The story became a world.
